Vesicular–arbuscular mycorrhizal infection of Quercus rubra seedlings

Abstract: Summary• The influence of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal ( VAM) host plants is reported on VAM infection of Quercus rubra seedlings, a predominately ectomycorrhizal species.• In a field experiment, Q. rubra seedlings were planted near Quercus montana and Acer rubrum (a VAM host) stump sprouts and near dead Quercus spp. stumps. In a subsequent glasshouse study, seedlings of Q. rubra were grown with or without VAM inoculum ( ± V) and with or without Sorghum bicolor ( ± S), a VAM host.• In the field experiment,… Show more

“…This phenomenon was observed among important forestry species of the genera Eucalyptus (Adjoud-Sadadou and HalliHargas, 2000), Quercus (Dickie et al, 2001), Pinus, Tsuga and Pseudotsuga (Wang and Qiu, 2006), in which both EcM and arbuscular mycorrhizas (AM) were described. Arbuscular mycorrhizas have been registered only in one unique Nothofagus dombeyi tree (Bidartondo et al, 2002), which raises the question of whether both types of mycorrhiza (EcM þ AM) can be found in Nothofagus specimens growing in natural ecosystems.…”

“…P. occidentalis and J. nigra form connections with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) (Schultz et al 1981;Schultz and Kormanik 1982), while Q. rubra forms connections with both AMF and ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) (Dickie et al 2001). I chose to focus on tree seedlings as previous studies have found woody plants to be most susceptible to the soil-mediated effects of A. petiolata (Stinson et al 2006).…”
