Vesicocolic fistula due to “collision” between adenocarcinoma of the colon and transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder

Abstract: A patient with sigmoidocystic fistula d u e t o "collision" between mucoid adenocarcinoma of the colon a n d transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder is presented. A wide resection of the colonic tumor, along with the involved bladder segment, a n d a decompressive colostomy with bladder drainage by catheter, were performed. The clinical symptoms, diagnostic procedures, operative treatment, and prognosis are discussed. Although fistular formation is a n indication of advanced carcinoma, wide resectio… Show more

“…Nonetheless, concomitant transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder occurring synchronously with a locally advanced colorectal malignancy causing a vesicoenteric fistula is extremely rare. Only two previous cases have been reported in the literature 3,4 . To our knowlegde, this is the first reported case of concomitant occurrence of three distinct pelvic malignancies.…”

“…Collision tumours comprising of two independent tumour phenotypes can also rarely occur in the colon. They can be a combination of adenocarcinoma with carcinoid tumour, 1 transitional cell carcinoma, 2 or lymphomas. [3][4][5][6] Although the formation of collision tumours is not well understood, theories explaining their occurrence primary malignant lymphoma and adenocarcinoma.…”

“…Colonic and appendiceal adenocarcinoma developing after granulosa cell tumour is one of the rarest occurrences. Metachronous tumor have been reported in literature from time to time, as adenocarcinoma of colon with carcinoid tumour [4], transitional cell tumor of bladder and adenocarcinoma of colon [5], adenocarcinoma of colon and yolk sac tumor of ovary [6]. The etiologic factors implicated for the development of such metachronous tumour are the primary tumour itself, genetic manipulation, genetic mutation, chemotherapy, radiotherapy etc.…”
