Type specimens and identity of the described species of Conus. VIII. The species described 1821-1830

“…A third cause of the low mean number of species descriptions per publication (Fig. 38) is that workers who treated the genus as a whole (Lamarck, 1822) or published accounts of large collections (Sowerby, 1825;Bronn, 1828;Menke, 1828Menke, , 1829Menke, , 1830 recognized most of the species as having previously been described in works available to them. They named as new only the small fraction for which they did not know of pre-existing names.…”

“…In 1829, Menke catalogued the collection of Freiherr Friedrich von der Malsburg ( 1 744-1823), a chief tax collector who lived in Eschenberg, Hesse, but who had spent many years in the U.S.A. The catalogue lists nearly 200 lots representing (according to Menke, 1829) 94 species of Conus. In contrast to his treatment in the Synopsis Methodica Molluscorurn (see above), Menke (1829) did not indicate infrageneric groups in Conus.…”
