Very Young Patient with Peculiar Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Lung.

Abstract: A 20-year-old man with squamous cell carcinoma of the lung is described. Histology of the open lung biopsy specimen revealed squamous cell carcinoma with definite keratinization. Interestingly, the tumor cells were characterized by partial expression of CD34antigen and neuroendocrine differentiation. The diagnosis was delayed in this case because of his young age. This delayed diagnosis resulted in rapid progression and short survival time. In our review of 667 cases of lung cancers at Okayama University Hospit… Show more

“…The risk of lung cancer in teenage patients has been rarely discussed. There were a few case reports and case series reviewing teenage lung cancer patients presented as dyspnea or cough, with a large solid mass appeared in CT images (Polo et al 2015;Emori et al 1999;Tajiri et al 1999;Balzer et al 2018). Majority of the adenocarcinoma patients had metastatic disease at diagnosis and more than half of the patients had died at final follow-up (Balzer et al 2018).…”

“…This epidemiologic discrepancy may be due to differences in carcinogens exposure or to biologic differences such as inefficient cell cycle arrest and DNA damage accumulation or cytochrome polymorphisms [ 9 , 12 , 13 ]. Regarding the clinico-pathologic features of LC in the young population, most retrospective series with sample sizes of more than 100 patients ( Table 2 ) reported a higher proportion of women and adenocarcinoma in younger groups compared to older patients [ 3 , 4 , 6 11 ], but some cases of very young patients with squamous cell LC have also been reported in recent years [ 14 16 ]. Data on the proportion of asymptomatic patients at diagnosis in young and old groups are discordant.…”

“…Most studies in patients in their twenties are limited to a handful of case reports [3][4][5]. Presenting symptoms are commonly weight loss, hemoptysis, pain, or respiratory complaints.…”
