Very Late Recurrence of Takotsubo Syndrome

Abstract: Recurrence of the Takotsubo syndrome is possible, and in the majority of cases it occurs within 4 years. The present report is focused on a case of the Takotsubo syndrome recurrence after 10 years. The patient had been admitted for the first time in 1999 with a diagnosis of "non-q wave acute anterolateral myocardial infarction." Ten years later, she was readmitted for suspected acute myocardial infarction; coronary arteries, however, were normal, and the left ventricular angiogram demonstrated apical balloonin… Show more

“…Recurrence of Takotsubo syndrome usually occurs in 4 years, on very rare occasions, recurrence has been observed after 10 years, and recurrence occurs in 1 year from the first presentation in 3% of patients. Nevertheless, this patient recurs in only 4 days, so, clinical doctors and families should pay close attention to the patients mood in long time, and avoid mind stimulation, thus, prevent the recurrence of Takotsubo syndrome.…”

“…[ 1 2 ] Data on recurrence of Takotsubo syndrome are limited: 5-year recurrence rates of 5%–22% have been reported, with the second episode occurring 3 months to 10 years after the first episode and also were reported recurrence of Takotsubo syndrome with a different anatomical variant. [ 2 3 4 ] In our case, the patient with Takotsubo cardiomyopathy and heart failure due to degenerative mitral and aortic regurgitation underwent the valve replacement surgery with early recurrence of left ventricular systolic dysfunction. Thus, Takotsubo cardiomyopathy may be considered as a risk factor of the postoperative left ventricular dysfunction triggered by surgical/anesthetic procedure.…”
