Vertical Transmission of Mycoplasma pneumoniae Infection

Abstract: Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a significant cause of pneumonia in school-aged children and young adults. We report a case of neonatal M. pneumoniae pneumonia in a preterm child manifesting in the first hours of life. Vertical transmission was demonstrated by the detection of M. pneumoniae in inflamed placental tissue indicating chorioamnionitis.

“…Since Hofbauer cells are localized in villi, they have been implicated in the spread of some infections, such as Zika or HIV-1 [ 43 ]. Less information is available about mycoplasma vertical transmission, although congenital infections in newborns are associated with the presence of mycoplasma in placental tissues [ 44 , 45 ]. As of this date, precise data on the vertical transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in pregnant women has not yet become available.…”

“…However, various mycoplasmas can disseminate through the bloodstream during or after a respiratory tract infection and spread to the placenta. Interestingly, vertical transmission cases of invasive M. pneumoniae are relatively rare [ 45 ]. However, certain associations between M. pneumoniae during pregnancy and hematological complications, such as hemolytic anemia, are among the most common pregnancy complications.…”

“…Its high incidence and rapid progress are important causes of death in children under five years old (2)(3)(4). Worldwide, two million children die of neonatal IPN every year, accounting for 5% to 35% of neonatal autopsies (5). As the initial clinical symptoms and signs of the disease are not obvious, the diagnosis is difficult, resulting in delay of the disease, resulting in a high mortality rate.…”
