Vertical reduction rectoplasty: a new treatment for idiopathic megarectum

Abstract: VRR is a new approach to the treatment of idiopathic megarectum. Clinical and physiological studies confirm that it can improve sensory feedback and defaecation. The procedure needs further evaluation as the number of patients undergoing the procedure increases.

“…Reports of anorectal manometry studies in children with chronic IC have shown higher thresholds of rectal sensation and rectoanal inhibitory reflex and impaired rectal compliance compared to healthy controls [16,17,30]. A similar study in adults before and after reduction rectoplasty for idiopathic megarectum has demonstrated improvement in rectal sensory thresholds, rectal compliance, and maximum tolerable rectal volume comparable to healthy volunteers [31].…”

“…Anorectal manometry study in children with idiopathic megarectum showed higher rectal pressure caused by poor rectal compliance in patients compared to controls [45]. A similar study in adults before and after reduction rectoplasty for idiopathic megarectum showed improvements in rectal compliance and rectal sensation and maximum tolerable rectal volume comparable to healthy volunteers [46].…”

“…There are no data in the literature exploring the effect of age on rectal dimensions and, thus, the significance of this is unknown, although it is known that IMR may affect all ages. 1 The widest rectal diameter was measured as in previous studies, 27,28 although it is accepted that this may not reflect the true average diameter of the rectum, along its entire length. The most appropriate level at which to measure rectal diameter is not established.…”
