Vertical mobility and cotton tolerance to trifludimoxazin, a new protoporphyrinogen oxidase-inhibiting herbicide, in three West Texas soils

Abstract: Trifludimoxazin, a new protoporphyrinogen oxidase-inhibiting herbicide, is being evaluated for possible use as a soil-residual active herbicide treatment in cotton for control of small-seeded annual broadleaf weeds. Laboratory and greenhouse studies were conducted to compare vertical mobility and cotton tolerance of trifludimoxazin to flumioxazin and saflufenacil, which are two currently registered protoporphyrinogen oxidase-inhibiting herbicides for use in cotton, in three West Texas soils. Vertical soil mobi… Show more

“…Limited information is available to compare the response of tall fleabane to saflufenacil þ trifludimoxazin-based herbicide mixtures. Trifludimoxazin is the newest herbicide among these PPO inhibitors, and it is being evaluated for possible use as a soil-residual herbicide treatment in cotton (Asher et al 2021).…”

“…12 Therefore, trifludimoxazin is adept at controlling weed species resistant to PPO-targeted herbicides, such as those from Amaranthus spp. and Ambrosia spp., that other PPO inhibitors cannot control 13 (Figure 1a). Despite the success of trifludimoxazin in resistant-weed control, the herbicide safeners are usually matched to produce considerable tolerance in nontarget crops, such as wheat, corn, and soybeans.…”

“…Tiafenacil and Epyrifenacil (Figure ) are two nonselective herbicides with a broad herbicidal spectrum and fast onset advantages, developed by Dongbu Hannong Chemical and Sumitomo Chemical Corporation Limited . Trifludimoxazin (Figure ) is the first PPO inhibitor herbicide with a triazinone structure with the unique binding mode to PPO and has a new mechanism of action to control some PPO-resistant weeds. In 2004, Koch et al reported the crystal structure of the Nicotiana tobacco PPO ( Nt PPO) complex with the phenylpyrazole inhibitor 4-bromo-3-(5′-carboxy-4′-chloro-2′-fluoro-phenyl)-1-methyl-5-trifluoromethyl-pyrazole (INH). There are three interaction modes between Nt PPO and INH (Figure ) including the π–π interaction between Phe392 and the pyrazole ring of INH, hydrophobic interactions of Leu372 and Leu356 to the benzene ring, and hydrogen-bonding interactions between Arg98 and the carbonyl group of INH, which provides a new vision for the design of novel PPO inhibitors …”
