The FTU machine was designed to operate with circular plasma. A modification of the FTU (FTU-D) load assembly has been studied in order to allow operation with strongly shaped plasmas (R = 1 m, a = 0.19-0.22 m, elongation k = 1.6, triangularity 6 = 0.8). The scientific aim of this proposal is the investigation of the so called advanced tokamak operation characterised by the simultaneous achievement of high-P and high bootstrap current fraction in regimes with high energy confinement achieved by current profile control. Changing the plasma shape from circular to a D configuration with either a limiter or X-point (single or double null) requires the protection of the upper and lower part of the vacuum vessel (VV) by the toroidal limiters. In order to produce the required shaping a new design of the transformer system (mechanical structure and central solenoid) was also developed. In the paper, the upper and lower toroidal limiters, the new central solenoid and the related mechanical structure will be described; the thermal, electromagnetic and mechanical analysis during plasma operation and disruptions will be reported and, finally, the installation and alignment procedure of the new limiters by remote handling equipment will be given.
