Vertebral Osteomyelitis Caused by Prevotella (Bacteroides) Melaninogenicus

Abstract: A 35-year-old, previously healthy female presented with severe low back pain, fever, and a high erythrocyte sedimentation rate 1 week after a routine dental cleaning. Technetium-labeled leukocyte scanning and magnetic resonance imaging scan of the spine were negative for osteomyelitis. The patient underwent biopsy, cultures from which grew Prevotella (Bacteroides) melaninogenicus. Appropriate antibiotic therapy resulted in resolution of symptoms. P. melaninogenicus is a gram-negative anaerobic bacillus that is… Show more

“…The hematogenous spread of Prevotella spp. may be transient, but can occasionally lead to the dissemination of these microorganisms in various organs and tissues and, consequently, to the development of distant infection sites, such as endocarditis, infected pseudoaneurysm, and liver, lung and brain abscesses, as well as osteoarticular infections [115,[127][128][129][130][131][132][133][168][169][170][171][172][173][174][175][176][177].…”

“…A review of literature on available data on anaerobic osteomyelitis with Prevotella isolates shows only nine cases reported till date. [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] Among this only one case reports secondary Prevotella infection on chronic tubercular vertebral osteomyelitis. A summary of the data available on Anaerobic osteomyelitis with prevotella isolates are shown in Table 1.…”
