Vertebral fracture in postmenopausal Chinese women: a population-based study

Abstract: This study is from a true random sample of postmenopausal women in urban China with high response rate. The prevalence of vertebral fractures in postmenopausal women in Beijing increases from 13% under age 60 to over 50% by age 80 years. A model with seven clinical risk factors with or without BMD is better than simple models and may guide the use of spine x-rays to identify women with vertebral fractures. More than half an hour of outdoor activity might correlate with lower risk of vertebral fracture in this … Show more

“…The prevalence of vertebral fracture in post-menopausal females in Shanghai was relatively lower than that in Beijing among all age group according to a recent study [7] : 11.1% vs. 22.6% among 60 to 69 years group, 20.0% vs. 31.4% among 70 to 79 years group, and 30.1% vs. 58.1% among older than 80 years group, respectively. Similarly, the prevalence among males in Shanghai was also lower than that in Hong Kong, [5] which also focused on community-dwelling males using the same method, with 14.4% vs. 15.2% in the 65 to 69 years group, 17.9% vs. 19.9% in the 70 to 79 years group, and 19.8% vs. 35.9% in aged older than 80 years, respectively.…”

“…Furthermore, vertebral fractures are often asymptomatic, so the incidence of selfreported vertebral fractures is often inaccurate, and a radiological examination is required for confirmation. The prevalence of radiographic vertebral fractures in China increases from 13% between ages 50 and 59 to over 50% after age 80 years [21]. A CT scout view image can be obtained with low radiation dose, and can be used to detect vertebral fracture [22,23] with good agreement with a conventional X-ray [24].…”
