Versatile Synthesis of Individual Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes from Nickel Nanoparticles for the Study of Their Physical Properties

Abstract: Discrete nickel catalyst nanoparticles (NP) have been used to grow isolated single-walled carbon nanotubes by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and micro-Raman spectroscopy are used to characterize these as-grown, isolated nanotubes. Using a conventional setup, we are able to produce narrow diameter distribution single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) (1.45 ( 0.5 nm), showing a clear mismatch with the larger broad size distribution of the cata… Show more

“…Among these tubes, three times the (11,10) nanotube was found. On the whole, we have obtained spectra from 10 perfectly and unambiguously identified nanotubes: (11,10) (3 times), (15,6), (16,7), (12,12), (17,9), (15,14), (27,4) and (23,21) (see additional materials). Furthermore, we measured the spectra from two other tubes that could not be fully identified, but of which diameters were quite precisely determined from the equatorial lines of their diffraction patterns, i.e.…”

“…Single-walled carbon nanotubes are grown by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) on highly doped silicon substrates with a 200 nm Silicon dioxide layer [16]. A metal structure consisting of 3 nm Cr and 110 nm Au is created by electron beam lithography on top of the as-grown carbon nanotubes.…”

Nanoindentation tests were performed using a MTS Nano Indenter XP with a Berkovich diamond tip.…”

“…Our previous work [6] was based on nanotubes synthesized by chemical vapor deposition [12] with an average diameter of 2 nm. SWNTs synthesized by the laser ablation method typically have a smaller diameter.…”
