Verruca vulgaris of the buccal mucosa

Abstract: Oral verruca vulgaris is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Verruca vulgaris most frequently occurs on the fingers, toes, soles, and dorsal surfaces of hands and is mostly asymptomatic. Varieties of verrucous and papillary lesions affect the skin as well as oral mucosa which may be either benign or reactive. Common wart is one of the most commonly observed skin growths and a lesion of childhood. Intraoral warts can occur at any age with equal incidence in both genders but are most commonly seen in… Show more

“…Other traditional treatment methods include surgery with curettage, pulse dye lasers, vitamin derivatives, immune response–modifying treatments, or cytostatic treatments (such as 5-fluorouracil [5-FU]). Despite a variety of treatment options, the effectiveness of treatment methods remains unclear, and some treatment methods may only inhibit further growth ( Mattoo and Bhatia, 2018 ; Muršić et al, 2020 ). In addition, several of those treatments are inconvenient for the patient because they may require frequent medical visits and prescriptions.…”

“…Intralesional therapies are an emerging and effective approach for treating recalcitrant warts, particularly those situated in challenging regions such as palmoplantar and periungual areas, which often exhibit resistance to conventional treatments ( Mattoo and Bhatia, 2018 ). Several intralesional therapies for warts have emerged, including vitamin D3; tuberculin purified protein derivative (PPD); Candida antigen (Candida); the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine; as well as various pharmaceutical mixtures, including immunotherapeutic drugs, digoxin–furosemide combinations, and antivirals such as acyclovir ( Aldahan et al, 2016 ; Fields et al, 2020 ; Ju et al, 2022 ).…”

“…VV represents a proliferative lesion of squamous epithelial [3] . It commonly affects the skin of the fingers, toes, soles, and dorsal surfaces of hands; however, in rare cases, it can infect the mucus membrane [4] . Grossly, VV varies in size and number; it appears as hyperkeratotic plaques or papules with clear boundaries and irregular rough surface [1,[4][5][6] .…”
