Abstract: An orthogonal mode interferometer (OMI) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for liquid refractive index sensing using the optical Vernier effect. The OMIs are based on weakly fiber microcouplers, which are fabricated by fusing single mode fiber and coreless fiber together.
