Vermiculite gelation: structural and textural evolution

Abstract: A B S T R A C T:Millimetre-sized flakes of a homogeneous, high layer charge vermiculite from S. Olalla (Spain) saturated with l'ornithine cations were made to swell in l'ornithine hydrochloride solutions of various concentrations, and the gel-like structures formed were subjected to uniaxial loads up to 150 g/cm 2. Small-angle X-ray diffraction measurements from the swollen flakes show well-modulated intensity patterns from which the equilibrium interlayer distances were obtained for the various swelling condi… Show more

“…It was first observed by Walker (1960) for butylammonium vermiculites, but has also been observed by Garrett and Walker (1962) for other short chain alkyl ammonium vermiculites and more recently by Rausell-Colom et al (1989) for ornithine (H2N(CH2}3CH(NH2)CO2H) vermiculites. The work presented in this paper investigates the uniaxial swelling in water of n-butylammonium vermiculite.…”

“…The mechanism leading to the appearance of these properties is linked with the interlamellar swelling of clay in contact with an ionic solution (Mdring 1946;Barshad 1953;Norrish 1954;Quirk 1968;Van Olphen 1977;Pons 1980;Saez-Aunon et al 1983;Tessier 1984;Raussel-Colom et al 1989). One problem occurring during drilling is to control the swollen states and their total or partial reversibility under the action of different physicochemical parameters and different stresses to which the clay can be subjected (chargebalancing cation, salt concentration of the solution, temperature).…”

“…The phenomenon of osmotic swelling occurs only with vermiculite. This effect was observed by Garret and Walker (1962) for short chain alkylammonium vermiculite and by Rausell-Colom et al (1989) for ornithine-vermiculite. The swelling of BAvermiculite has recently been reported by several workers (Smalley et al 1989;Crawford et al 1991;Lee and Solin 1991;Fan et al 1992;Williams et al 1994).…”
