27Objective: The beneficial effects of cold argon plasma (CAP) on wound healing and its 28 capacity for bacterial decontamination has recently been documented. However, despite 29 favourable reports from experimental trials and human applications, the first in vivo studies in 30 small animals did not prove any decontamination effect in canine bite wounds. 31 The present study therefore aimed to evaluate the decontamination effect of CAP in different 32 bacteria frequently encountered in canine bite wounds in vitro. 33 Methods: Standard strains of Escherichia (E.) coli, Staphylococcus (S.) pseudintermedius, S. 34 aureus, Streptococcus (Sc.) canis, Pseudomonas (P.) aeruginosa and Pasteurella multocida 35were investigated. To evaluate the influence of the bacterial growth phase, each bacterium 36 was incubated in nutrient broth for 3 and 8 hours, respectively, before argon plasma treatment. 37Three different bacterial concentrations were created per bacterium and growth phase, and 38 each was exposed to cold plasma at a gas flow rate of 5 standard litres/minute of argon for 30 39 seconds, 1 minute and 2 minutes. 40 Results: Argon treatment resulted in acceptable decontamination rates (range 98.9-99.9%) in 41 all bacteria species in vitro; however, differences in susceptibility were detected in the 42 different tested bacteria. Treatment time significantly (P<0.05) correlated with the 43 decontamination rate in E. coli, Sc. canis and S. aureus, with an exposure time of 2 minutes 44 being most effective. The initial bacterial concentration significantly (P<0.05) influenced 45 decontamination in Pasteurella multocida and P. aeruginosa, in which treatment time was not 46 as important. The growth phase only influenced decontamination in S. pseudintermedius. 47 Conclusion: CAP exerts effective antibacterial activity against the tested bacteria strains in 48 vitro, with species specific effects of treatment time, growth phase and concentration. 49 50 Keywords: cold argon plasma, bacterial decontamination, time-dependent effects, 51 concentration-dependent effects, bacterial growth 53 Microbial multidrug-resistance (MDR) is one of the main issues that must be solved by 54 modern medicine [1,2,3]. Cold atmospheric plasma use in clinical studies is mainly limited to the treatment of chronic wounds, but its application in a wide range of medical fields is now the goal of many analyses. It is therefore likely that its application spectrum will be expanded in the future. Cold atmospheric plasma has been shown to reduce microbial load without any known significant negative effects on healthy tissues, and this should enhance its possible application to any microbial infection site. It has also been shown to have anti-tumour effects. In addition, it acts proliferatively on stem cells and other cultivated cells, and the highly increased nitric oxide levels have a very important effect on this proliferation. Cold atmospheric plasma use may also have a beneficial effect on immunotherapy in cancer patients. Finally, it is possible that the use of plasma devices will not remain limited to surface structures, because current endeavours to develop sufficiently miniature microplasma devices could very likely lead to its application in subcutaneous and internal structures. This study summarises the available literature on cold plasma action mechanisms and analyses of its current in vivo and in vitro use, primarily in the fields of regenerative and dental medicine and oncology.

Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is a novel technology with boundless significance that can be used in the medical sector that offers noninvasive in-vivo applications without damaging the living tissues. CAPs can be obtained by curtailing the concentration of high-energetic electrons per phase and by freezing molecules/atoms (devoid of charge) in plasma utilizing gas circulation and atmospheric air, which includes a variety of charged and neutral reactive entities, UV rays, electric currents, and fields, etc. that have an influence on cellular material in a multitude of diverse manners. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), produced by the plasma, essentially cause biological and therapeutically advantageous plasma effects. CAP plasma has several important biological functions, including the deactivation of pathogens, induction of tissue restoration and cell propagation, the annihilation of cells by triggering apoptosis, etc. Several fundamental concepts are defined, even if the precise process of the effect of plasma on biomolecules is still not properly identified. Depending on the biological synthesis of RNS and ROS in reactions to plasma emissions, the present review described several aspects of plasma therapy in neuroscience, particularly in anti-glioblastoma, neuro-differentiation, and neuroprotection and also the various applications of CAP in medical fields where it is used in the therapy of SARS-CoV-2, cancer therapy, and chronic and acute wounds. Furthermore, the proliferation in stem cells, dental medicines, dermatology, and a brief insight into CAP devices and their risk factors was highlighted.
