The study of the leafmining moth of the chestnut miner (Cameraria ohridella Deschka & Dymić, 1986) was carried out through the planting of the common horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum L.) in the Main Botanical Garden of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The effect of various degrees of insolation of horse chestnut plants on leaf morphology and the composition of secondary metabolites, as well as the relationship of these parameters with the number and density of C. ohridella populations during the growing season, was studied. The solar influence, it was noted, had a significant impact. Thus, the largest number of the pests was recorded on the leaves of the sunlit side of the tree crown, and the smallest on the leaves of the shady part of the crown. The low content of polyphenols in the pool of secondary metabolites in the tissues of the A. hippocastanum leaves did not deter C. ohridella and poorly protected the plants from this miner, while the significant content of carbohydrates in the leaves reduced the resistance of chestnut plants to damage by the Ohrid leaf miner.

Abstract. The impact of phyto-endophagous insects on their host-plants is restricted, at fi rst, by the plants own defences, which more or less limit the proportion of host-leaves potentially acceptable by egg-laying mothers in view of the future successful development of the brood. But, due to the supplementary contributions of top-down and horizontal regulations, the actual incidence of endophagous insects (especially leaf-miners and leaf-gallers) among leaves is likely being still (quite) lower than the proportion of potentially acceptable host-leaves. But, more precisely, how large and how variable is the gap between the proportion of potentially acceptable resource and the fraction actually exploited, i.e. the actual incidence of the insect? While the topic has been treated within a few particular couples herbivore-host, we still lack of a larger overview of the subject, at the scale of a reasonably representative set of members of the guilds of leaf-miners and leaf-gallers. We address the issue, taking advantage of a specifi cally designed procedure that allows the convenient and quick indirect estimate of the proportion of host-leaves potentially acceptable by mothers (a proportion that, otherwise, seems virtually impossible to record directly in the fi eld). Considering a large fi eld survey (115 samples, 22 couples insect/host-plant), the estimated gap between the potentially acceptable resource and the actual incidence reveals on average quite signifi cant, while strongly variable from case to case: indeed, the exploitation ratio of the potentially acceptable resource may, occasionally, be as low as 20% for some gall-inducers and even decrease to less than 10% for some mine-fomers. Accordingly, as expected, the recorded incidence of the insects may not at all serve as a reasonable predicator of the maximum possible incidence that would be authorised by the potential of acceptable host-resource.Résumé. Quantifi er l'écart entre l'incidence réelle des insectes mineurs de feuilles et inducteurs de galles de feuilles et la proportion de feuilles-hôtes potentiellement acceptable par ceuxci. L'impact des insectes endo-phytophages sur leurs plantes-hôtes est en premier lieu restreint par les propres défenses des plantes, lesquelles limitent la part des feuilles potentiellement acceptables par les mères pondeuses, afi n d'assurer le bon développement de leur descendance. En raison des contributions supplémentaires propres aux régulations «top-down» et «horizontale», l'incidence effective des insectes endo-phytophages (en particulier fonceurs de mines et inducteurs de galles foliaires) est ordinairement bien inférieure à la proportion des feuilles potentiellement acceptables. Comparison of the severity of selection among beech leaves prior to egg-laying between a leaf-mining and two gall-inducing insects

Abstract. Quantitative behavioural traits associated with egg-laying, such as the level of selectivity for host-supports and the size of egg clutches, are generally thought to be of great importance for the subsequent survival and development of offspring. These quantitative traits, however, are often difficult to assess reliably by direct observation in the field. This is particularly the case when the insects are very tiny, which is the case for most galling and leaf mining insects. However, a new approach, the "Melba" procedure, allows the indirect inference of these quantitative traits, using easily recorded field-data only. Application of this diagnostic procedure to a large series of samples of beech leaves (Fagus silvatica), harbouring either a leaf miner, Phyllonorycter maestingella (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) or one or the other of two galling insects, Mikiola fagi or Hartigiola annulipes (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) indicates that the leaf miner differs significantly from the two species of galling insect in term of combined values of hostacceptance ratio and average clutch-size, while the two gall-inducing species remain substantially undistinguishable from each other according to these traits. Thus, the galling insects (i) show stronger selectivity for a host than does the miner at any given average clutch-size and (ii) show larger average clutch-size at any given level of selectivity. That is, for at least these three species, the galling insects show a greater level of selectivity when choosing leaves to oviposit on but, then, tend to lay larger egg-clutches. These differences may be due (i) to the gall-inducing process requiring far more of leaf tissues than being simply palatable, which makes it likely that galling species will be more selective in their choice of leaves than leaf miners and (ii) to the capacity of galls to become nutrient sinks, which may help explain why the galling insects laid larger egg clutches. However, whether these trends can be regarded as general rather specific to this particular case, depends on the outcome of future studies on other groups of insects with similar life histories.
