Verbascoside—A Review of Its Antitumor Activities

Abstract: Cancer is a set of diseases including abnormal growth of cells that can spread to another tissue. Verbascoside (or acteoside) is a naturally occurring, water-soluble secondary metabolite with significant biological properties, which is distributed widely in plant kingdom. Verbascoside is pharmacologically active compounds with many recent evidences that support its biological activities and safety. This review focuses on the recent studies that concerned with the antitumor activities of verbascoside alone and … Show more

“…Cytotoxic effect of condensed tannins was reported against MCF-7 and Hs 578T breast cancer cells, Caco-2 colon carcinoma cells, and DU 145 prostate cancer cells [ 105 ]. Cytotoxic effect against MDA-MB-231 (IC 50 = 0.159–0.258 μM) [ 106 ] and a range of other cancer cell lines, including U87 glioblastoma cell line, was reported for verbascoside [ 107 ], the major phenylethanoid of investigated species.…”

“…Currently, TCM is a promising alternative adjuvant to traditional chemotherapy, which is advantageous for the prevention and treatment of OC (46,47). VB is a bioactive constituent of diverse Chinese herbs that possess anti-cancer activities (48). In this study, we found that VB inhibited the proliferation and migration, and induced the apoptosis of OC cells.…”

“…Moreover, we clarified the mechanism by which VB induces M1 polarization, which is regulated by the CCN1-mediated AKT/NF-kB signalling pathway. VB is a naturally occurring secondary metabolite widely existed in the plant kingdom, and possesses anti-tumour activity for the treatment of various cancers, such as human oral squamous cell carcinoma, colorectal cancer, and glioblastoma (33,(48)(49)(50). Zhang et al demonstrated that VB effectively inhibited the growth and metastasis of human oral squamous cell carcinoma cells (49).…”

“…It is pharmacologically active compound and known that has antitumor effect, cytotoxic selectivity and anticancer activity in in vitro and in vivo studies. [38,39] It also possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties. [40] The other compound with the highest amount (10873.09 mg/kg) in the extract is chlorogenic acid, readily found in food, medicines and cosmetics (Figure 1 and Table 6).…”
