Verbal therapeutic behavior of expert psychoanalytically oriented, gestalt, and behavior therapists.

Abstract: Expert psychoanalytically oriented, gestalt, and behavior therapists submitted representative audiotaped therapy interviews. A content analysis of therapist verbal behavior was conducted by means of the System for Assessing Therapist Communications, an instrument developed by the authors. Comparisons across the three theoretical orientations were made on six dimensions of behavior: type of therapeutic activity, temporal focus, interview focus, intitiative, communication, and therapeutic climate. “…The systematic differences in VRM use found among therapists of different schools (Stiles, 1979), and illustrated in the above excerpts, converge with similar findings by other investigators using other intersubjective systems (Brunink & Schroeder, 1979;Cartwright, 1966;Hill, Thames, & Rardin, 1979;Snyder, 1945;Strupp, 1955Strupp, , 1957. The consistency of these results suggests that if there is a common core to psychotherapeutic process, it is unlikely to be found in the therapists' verbal techniques.…”

“…The theoretical orientations of therapists have quite consistently been shown to relate to differences in the type of activity employed by different therapists (Brunink & Schroeder, 1979;Cross & Sheehan, 1982;Larson, 1980;Lohmann & Mittag, 1979;Luborsky et al, 1982;Meara et al, 1981;Sloane et al, 1975). However, there have been relatively few differences in treatment outcome found to result from different theoretical orientations (Luborsky, Singer & Luborsky, 1975).…”

“…Both showed equally high levels of warmth. Brunink and Schroeder (1979) conducted a process analysis in which behavior therapists were found to provide greater emotional support than analytic therapists, were more willing to assume a nondirective style of interaction, communicated empathy, maintained rapport, and provided a supportive relationship. Marmor (1971) Experimental studies on the influence of the therapeutic relation ship have become increasingly sophisticated over the years.…”
