A Comparative Tele‐EEG Study of Adolescent and Adult Epileptics

SUMMARY In order to study the influence of environment on epileptic patients, two groups of patients were observed, recorded by EEG telemetry and compared: a group of adolescents (16–20 years old) and a group of adults (30–48 years old). Two paramétérs were used: the frequency of diffuse EEG paroxysms in each group in various types of situation; and the ratio between the number of EEG paroxysms accompanied by clinical manifestations and the total number of paroxysms, both clinical and nonclinical. The two groups were found to react similarly in certain situations but not in others. The results also showed that adults are more strongly influenced by the environment than adolescents and that their freedom whether or not to develop minor clinical seizures is less random. RESUME Adolescents et adultes épileptiques. Etude Télé‐EEG comparative Pour étudier l'influence de l'environnement sur les malades épileptiques, deux groupes de malades ont été observés, enregistrés en télé‐EEG et comparés entre eux: un groupe d'adolescents de 16 à 20 ans, et un groupe d'adultes de 30 à 48 ans. Pour cela, deux paramètres ont été utilisés: la fréquence d'apparition des paroxysmes EEG diffus dans chaque groupe pour chaque type de situations; et le rapport entre le chiffre des paroxysmes EEG accompagnes de manifestations cliniques et celui de tous les paroxysmes EEG. Les résultats montrent que les deux groupes réagissent de façon semblable au cours de certaines situations et de façon opposée au cours d'autres situations. Ces résultats montrent aussi que les adultes subissent plus que les adolescents l'influence de l'environnement et que leur choix entre la présence ou l'absence de manifestations cliniques mineures est moins aléatoire.
