Ventricular inversion without transposition of the great vessels in situs inversus

Abstract: A classification of one type of congenital malformation previously reported (de la Cruz et al., 1967) is based on the integration of an embryological theory for ventricular inversions with the embryological concepts of trunco-conal malformations (de la Cruz and da Rocha, 1956). In that classification we consider that in each situs, either solitus or inversus ventricular inversions may be associated with: (a) normally arranged great vessels (not transposed); (b) transposition of the great vessels; (c) persisten… Show more

“…[3] is not available ; however, both of the cases of Espino-Vela et al . [2] had complex associated defects such as total anomalous pulmonary venous connection, mitral stenosis or atresia, and valvar and infundibular pulmonic stenosis . Both of these cases presented with hypoxic or cyanotic spells, dyspnea, and decreased-to-normal pulmonary vascular markings on chest x-ray .…”

“…More than 40 cases of isolated or complex forms of discordant atrioventricular with concordant ventriculo-arterial connections have been reported, including cases with heterotaxy. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]13 The challenge of diagnosing this rare cardiac defect, especially if it is part of a complex CHD, has not changed since its first description. The main problem in all historical patients was that the correct anatomical diagnosis was only made at autopsy.…”

“…1,2 Reports about this complex cardiac defect remain rare and are mainly case descriptions and small patient series, often lacking information on long-term follow-up. [3][4][5][6][7][8] Atrial switch operation by Mustard or Senning technique is the surgical method of choice. [3][4][5][6][7][8] We report here a series of eight patients with discordant atrioventricular and concordant ventriculoarterial connections by discussing the difficulties in correctly describing the anatomy and obtain an accurate pre-operative diagnosis in these complex settings.…”
