Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia in Low Birth Weight Neonates at a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Retrospective Observational Study

Abstract: VAP was a problem for the LBW infants with intubation for >48 hours in our neonatal intensive care unit. VAP most frequently occurred at a postmenstrual age of 30-32 weeks in this study. Longer duration of tube placement and parenteral nutrition were found in the VAP group. Early removal of the endotracheal tube and adequate enteral nutrition may decrease the occurrence of VAP in LBW infants.

“…VAP is associated to some secondary short‐term outcomes and this consistent with available data in neonates and older patients . It is interesting to notice that these findings have been found despite our aggressive policy of noninvasive respiratory support .…”

“…The VAP definition is also disputable, as it is not dedicated to neonates but generalized for infants aged less than 12 months, although this is the only available definition so far. Ours is a relatively small study, although comparable to previous studies in terms of sample size, VAP incidence and aetiology . Our study has an explanatory design.…”
