has been provided concerning the local palaeoclimates, and the effects of the Messinian Salinity Crisis on terrestrial areas surrounding the Mediterranean Sea are currently a matter of discussion. Therefore, the goals of this paper are to describe the mineralogy, geochemistry, and depositional environment of the Late Miocene/Pliocene fluviolacustrine deposits and associated palaeosols and calcretes within the CVP and to interpret the palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic evolution data.

ÖZNiğde İli'nin Çiftlik ilçesine bağlı, Ovalıbağ Köyü ve yakın çevresinde yüzeyleyen Pleistosen-Holosen yaşlı diyatomit sahası, araştırma yeri olarak belirlenmiştir. Diyatomitin paleontolojik, kimyasal ve mineralojik özelliklerini belirlemek için ince kesit, taramalı elektron mikroskop (SEM) ve X-işını difraktometresi (XRD), enerji dispersif X-ışını spektrum (EDS) ve kimyasal analiz (X-RF ve ICP) yöntemleri uygulanmıştır. PALEONTOLOGICAL, CHEMICAL AND MİNERALOGICAL FEATURES OF DIATOMITE IN CIFTLIK (NIGDE) ABSTRACTThe aim of this study is to determine paleontological, chemical and mineralogical aspects of PleistoceneHolocene diatomite of Ovalıbağ village in Çiftlik region. For this, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersion X-ray spectrometry (EDS) and some chemical analyses have been carried out (X-RF and ICP). Diatomite beds alternate with pebbls, sands, silts and volcanic tuffs and consist of various diatomite types such as Cyclotella sp., Epithemia sp., fragilaria sp. Diatomite is commonly not pure and associated with mud, silt and sand. Physically, it is observed that diatomite shows no reaction with aside (except for HF) and begins to cook at 1150°C and to melt at 1300°C. Diatomite is composed of opal A, opal CT, quartz, feldspar and montmorillonite. If these materials are heated to 1200°C, then the dominated minerals are opal and/or cristobalite, quartz and feldspar. Chemical analyses yielded SiO 2 65.2-79.8%, Al 2 O 3 9.1-12.3%, Fe 2 O 3 2.9-4.5%, CaO 0.6-2.3%, Na 2 O 1.1-1.4% and K 2 O 1.4-2.1%. This data has been compared with those published in various world literatures. SiO 2 content of Çiftlik diatomite is lower in comparison to world literatures.
