Venous thromboembolism prophylaxis after hip preservation surgery: a review and presentation of institutional experience

Abstract: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a serious complication after major orthopedic procedures. The best options for prevention of the VTE are still debated. The most popular evidence-based guidelines for prevention and treatment of VTE in orthopedic surgery addressed the total hip or knee arthroplasty and hip fractures as the major orthopedic surgeries. Majority of studies have evaluated the different modalities of the VTE prophylaxis in patients undergiong hip or knee arthroplasty. Hip preservation surgeries (HPS)… Show more

“…As described before, the incidence of DVT in the current study was lower than the incidences of DVT after THA and hip arthroscopic surgery. However, the incidence of DVT was comparable to that in studies indicating the effectiveness of other thromboprophylaxis protocols [ 6 , 13 , 14 , 20 ].…”

“…Several guidelines aimed at preventing DVT and PE have recommended the administration of anticoagulant drugs, based on imaging studies that show their efficacy for reducing the incidence of DVT, including asymptomatic DVT [ 4 , 5 ]. Based on a recent review, the incidence of DVT after PAO ranges from 0 to 2.1% [ 6 ]. However, relatively few reports have assessed DVT related to hip preservation surgery, compared to that for total hip arthroplasty (THA).…”

“…Standard thromboprophylaxis includes anti-embolism stockings, pneumatic calf compression pumps during surgery and low-molecular-weight heparin during the inpatient stay. Aspirin 150 mg for 3 weeks once daily is administered on discharge [ 10–12 ].…”
