“…5 Two types of IVC filter exist: permanent and non-permanent. Permanent filters are designed to function indefinitely while non-permanent filters are subdivided into temporary filters which must be removed or retrievable filters that can either be removed or left in place as a permanent implant, depending on the patient's clinical condition.…”

“…4 Moreover, a study published in 1990 by Shackford et al found a VTE incidence of 7% among trauma patients, despite the use of mechanical or pharmacological prophylactic measures. 5 However, more recent data have suggested lower incidences of VTE. A cohort study from the UK of acute trauma patients admitted between 2010-2011 found the incidence of PE to be 0.8%; most of these patients had lower limb fractures.…”

“…PE was reported at a rate of 18.6% in individuals who survived longer (Geerts et al, 1996). Patients over 45, a requirement of more than three days bed rest, a previous history of VTE, fractures of the lower extremity, pelvis, spine, the development of coma and plegia, a requirement for blood transfusion and surgery further increase the risk of DVT and PE, therefore, effective and safe prophylactic anticoagulant treatment is recommended in traumatic patients unless contraindicated (Shackford et al, 1990). …”
