Venous hemangioma of the mesoappendix: Report of a case and a brief review of the Japanese literature

Abstract: We present herein the rare case of a 48-year-old man in whom an abdominal mass, revealed by celiotomy to be a solid tumor of the mesoappendix, was histologically diagnosed as having a venous hemangioma. To our knowledge, only 18 cases of mesenteric hemangioma have been reported in Japan, including the present case. However, establishing a correct diagnosis preoperatively is extremely difficult despite advanced imaging techniques. In fact, a mesenteric mass was diagnosed preoperatively in only 3 of these 18 cas… Show more

“…Ultrasound examination usually reveals a solid mass of mixed echogenicity, whereas CTscan additionally provides information concerning the tumor extent, multiplicity, vascularization and involvement of the intestine or other intraabdominal or retroperitoneal structures [22]. Due to a lack of specific signs such as phleboliths, preoperative imaging in the case presented failed to establish the correct diagnosis.…”

“…Venous hemangiomas have been reported in a variety of sites, including the mediastinum, mesentery, skeletal muscle, and retroperitoneum. [106][107][108][109][110][111] Venous malformations histologically are composed of nodules of irregular venous-type vascular channels that may vary in size. This lobular or grouped arrangement of vessels is helpful for distinguishing these benign from malignant vascular proliferations.…”
