Venous Coupler in Pediatric Free Tissue Transfer: Case Series and Literature Review

Abstract: Background: Venous couplers have gained widespread acceptance as an effective, safe, and time-efficient alternative for hand-sewn anastomosis in microsurgical reconstruction. The literature on venous couplers use in pediatric free tissue transfer is scant. The purpose of this study is to present our experience with coupler-assisted venous anastomosis in young pediatric free flap reconstruction. Methods: This is a retrospective single-center review of al… Show more

“…Prolongation of the operative time resulting from this should be permissible as long as the vascular time per vessel is ≤ 30 min. Additionally, the coupler device causes less damage to the intima in both venous and arterial anastomoses, improves the flap engraftment rate, 23,[30][31][32] and shortens the operative time by an average of 7 min during anastomosis of two veins. 32 It is important for the reconstructive surgeon to focus on shortening the vascular time through training, devising the procedure in advance, and utilizing a coupler device.…”
