Venous Blood-Based Biomarkers in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study: Rationale, Design, and Results From the 2015 Wave

Abstract: Blood biomarkers provide critical information about the health of older populations, especially in large developing countries where self-reports of health are often inaccurate due to lack of access to health care. However, it is very difficult to collect blood samples in representative population surveys in such countries. The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), a nationally representative study of middle-aged and older Chinese, represents one of the first efforts to include blood biomarke… Show more

“…CHARLS collected and assayed venous blood samples in 2011 and 2015 waves. Analysis of blood samples encompassed 2 stages: (1) a complete blood count analysis was performed at local county health center after collection; and (2) the samples were all then transferred to the study headquarters where they were assayed [ 17 ].…”

“…All blood samples were shipped to Beijing and stored at -70°C. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP), total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), triglycerides, fasting glucose, creatinine, and uric acid were tested [ 19 , 20 ]. Creatinine levels were measured using a rate-blanked and compensated Jaffe creatinine method.…”

“…Further details about the process of the blood sample collection, transportation and storage have been published elsewhere. 17 In the 2015-2016 wave of CHARLS, a total of 21 095 adults were interviewed and 20 284 participants were asked to consent to a venous blood draw: 13 013 (64.2%) donated whole blood, 17 of which 6743 participants were 60 years or older. The analytical sample consisted of 6706 adults who (1) were 60 years or older, (2) had complete data on creatinine and cystatin C (needed to estimate kidney function), and (3) had cross-sectional blood Kidney function CKD is defined as abnormalities of kidney structure or function, present for 3 months, with implications for health; GFR is generally accepted as the best index of kidney function, and reduced kidney function is defined as a GFR less than 60 mL/min per 1.73 m², according to Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes guidelines.…”
