VenoMS—A Website for the Low Molecular Mass Compounds in Spider Venoms

Abstract: Spider venoms are highly complex mixtures. Numerous spider venom metabolites are uniquely found in spider venoms and are of interest concerning their potential use in pharmacology, agriculture, and cosmetics. A nontargeted ultra-high performance high-resolution electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HR-ESI-MS/MS) approach offers a resource-saving way for the analysis of crude spider venom. However, the identification of known as well as the structure elucidation of unknown low molecular mass spider venom… Show more

“…A database of low molecular weight toxins in spider venom, named “VenoMS”, was developed and contained information about their origin, structure, biological activity, and the linked literature. Data regarding spider polyamine and derivatives under mass spectrometry (MS) analysis are also available, with acylpolyamines listed under their generic names [ 32 ]. Such generic nomenclature was intended to uniformize the names of polyamine toxins.…”

“…Thus, the nomenclature designates the acyl polyamine’s head, tail, amino acid linkers, and the methylene units in the polyamine backbones between the amino groups. For instance, the generic name of PA-366 is 4-OH-PhLac343 [ 32 , 33 ].…”

“…There are several classes of abundant small‐molecule components in spider venoms (Forster et al ., 2020). One important group, described as neurotransmitters in other animals, include serotonin, octopamine, 5‐hydroxytryptamine, 5‐methoxytryptamine, histamine, tyramine, γ‐aminobutyric acid, aspartic acid and glutamic acid (McCormick & Meinwald, 1993).…”

“…Thus, spiders play an important ecological role in keeping insect populations at bay [ 14 ]. To enable spiders to overcome diverse types of prey, their venom comprises a complex mixture of active biological components, including proteins, peptides, acylpolyamines, small amines, histamine, and other small molecules [ 12 , 15 , 16 , 17 ]. Peptides are the most abundant components in their venom, with cysteine-rich peptides being the most important functional component [ 17 ].…”
