Vendor-Neutral Case Input into a Server-based Digital Teaching File System

Abstract: Although digital teaching files are important to radiology education, there are no current satisfactory solutions for export of Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) images from picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) in desktop publishing format. A vendor-neutral digital teaching file, the Radiology Interesting Case Server (RadICS), offers an efficient tool for harvesting interesting cases from PACS without requiring modifications of the PACS configurations. Radiologists push imagi… Show more

“…Many PACS vendors do not allow the installation of a DICOM viewer application or image manipulation software on their workstation; however, in any DTF, it is essential to provide this functionality at the time of interpretation. 7,11 The moment an interesting case is identified on PACS, the user can send it to RadICS, select the key images, complete the coded and free text case information, crop the image, and optimize the window and level settings without leaving the workstation.…”

“…Note that because all images are stored in their original format in Research PACS (which currently has 2.8 TB of storage space), there is no loss of image data unlike studies that rely on JPEG images. RADICS-a vendor-neutral digital teaching file system-emphasizes the importance of minimizing clinical workflow disruption when image studies are copied into a research archive [18]; however, TARAS enables fast and reliable export of patient data during a clinical study. The ease of gathering a vast amount of data and the high level of integration when compared to many other research databases are key factors for successful implementation of medical research projects.…”

“…The Export Selector automatically processes the DICOM images, converting them into Web-viewable images, and displays them on the computer monitor (8). The radiologist then selects the key images from the examination (Fig 8).…”
