“…11 Similar findings were seen in a study of 73 patients with suprarenal IVCF, which reported 11 (15%) cases of caudal filter migration. 5 Despite concerns regarding increased risk of filter migration in the larger caliber suprarenal IVC, 12,13 filter migration rates appear to be comparably low in Option Elite and Tulip filters placed both above and below the renal veins. Filter migration was only seen in 1 (8%) patient in our study, but this patient had a substantially longer indwelling time than the other patients in our study cohort.…”

“…However, this does not account for the significant movement of the short axis, which may actually become the longer axis during expiration and Valsalva. In fact, the AP diameter is rarely accounted for during consideration of filter placement, 14,15 which strongly suggests that measurements for filter selection should be obtained during Valsalva maneuvers to obtain a true maximum diameter and avoid undersizing. The AP diameter and dynamic measurements may need to be considered during filter sizing.…”

“…Friedland et al 20 compared duplex ultrasound with contrast cavography for evaluation of IVC filter placement and found an excellent correlation between the two with respect to IVC diameter measurements, with only one ultrasound examination considered inadequate. These authors concluded that duplex ultrasound provided an adequate IVC image for filter placement.…”
