Characterizing Movement Fluency in Musical Performance: Toward a Generic Measure for Technology Enhanced Learning

Virtuosity in music performance is often associated with fast, precise, and efficient sound-producing movements. The generation of such highly skilled movements involves complex joint and muscle control by the central nervous system, and depends on the ability to anticipate, segment, and coarticulate motor elements, all within the biomechanical constraints of the human body. When successful, such motor skill should lead to what we characterize as fluency in musical performance. Detecting typical features of fluency could be very useful for technology-enhanced learning systems, assisting and supporting students during their individual practice sessions by giving feedback and helping them to adopt sustainable movement patterns. In this study, we propose to assess fluency in musical performance as the ability to smoothly and efficiently coordinate while accurately performing slow, transitionary, and rapid movements. To this end, the movements of three cello players and three drummers at different levels of skill were recorded with an optical motion capture system, while a wireless electromyography (EMG) system recorded the corresponding muscle activity from relevant landmarks. We analyzed the kinematic and coarticulation characteristics of these recordings separately and then propose a combined model of fluency in musical performance predicting music sophistication. Results suggest that expert performers' movements are characterized by consistently smooth strokes and scaling of muscle phasic coactivation. The explored model of fluency as a function of movement smoothness and coarticulation patterns was shown to be limited by the sample size, but it serves as a proof of concept. Results from this study show the potential of a technology-enhanced objective measure of fluency in musical performance, which could lead to improved practices for aspiring musicians, instructors, and researchers.

Computer technology is increasingly integrated into various teaching and educational processes. The role of various educational tools and artificial intelligence in the educational process is becoming more and more significant for overall educational success. In this paper, a review of the scientific literature on the application of computer technology for music education is given, with an emphasis on learning to play musical instruments. It has been observed that for many created systems, proper evaluation was not conducted to determine the created systems’ effectiveness in achieving desired learning outcomes. An innovative part of this paper is a description of a new conceptual model of an adaptive system for self-paced learning to play musical instruments. A prototype of an adaptive drum kit learning system has been created based on the presented model. The main goal of this research was to determine the effectiveness of created prototype in achieving students’ learning outcomes. In the evaluation process, the use of created prototype was compared to other self-paced learning methods to learn how to play the drum kit. The obtained data were analyzed by ANOVA method, along with other appropriate statistical methods. The results of the research showed that the use of an adaptive drum kit learning system has a positive impact on achieving learning outcomes. The participants who learned to play using the created prototype were more precise in playing, played more accurate rhythmic patterns, and were rated with higher marks by an independent expert compared to the control groups. Based on the obtained results, it can be concluded that there is a potential for the application of computer technology in the process of learning to play musical instruments.

In recent years, countless platforms and resources have proliferated in the web environment which are devoted to the development of new didactic and methodological strategies in the context of the teaching-learning of music. This paper is a systematic review that aims to identify and critically analyze the main contributions of the scientific literature on the pedagogical, didactic, and methodological transformations that are developed in the webspace. Research papers published between 1990 and 2020 and indexed in the main academic databases have been sought and selected according to a series of relevance criteria, resulting in a study sample n=57. The results show that the web environment is an ecosystem for teaching-learning in a permanent state of development and renewal, which favors the socialization of musical practice, self-learning based on the development of creativity, and the proliferation of systems for self-assessment or assisted tutoring in the environment of learning communities oriented towards common interests. En los últimos años han proliferado innumerables plataformas y recursos en el entorno web dedicados a desarrollar nuevas estrategias didácticas y metodológicas en el contexto de la enseñanza-aprendizaje de la música. El presente trabajo constituye una revisión sistemática que pretende identificar y analizar críticamente las principales aportaciones de la literatura científica en torno a las transformaciones pedagógicas, didácticas y metodológicas que se desarrollan en el espacio web. Se buscan y seleccionan, en función de una serie de criterios de pertinencia, trabajos de investigación publicados entre 1990 y 2020, e indexados en las principales bases de datos académicas, conformando una muestra de estudio n=57. Los resultados ponen de manifiesto que el entorno web constituye un ecosistema para la enseñanza-aprendizaje en permanente estado de desarrollo y renovación, que favorece la socialización de la práctica musical, el autoaprendizaje basado en el desarrollo de la creatividad, y la proliferación de sistemas para la autoevaluación o tutorización asistida en el entorno de comunidades de aprendizaje orientadas a intereses comunes.
