Panel acoustic contribution analysis (PACA) is a practical engineering tool for the reduction of interior structure-borne noise in passenger cars. In this study, the current PACA method has been improved for sound field refinement of the entire interior. Two new parameters, the "acoustic contribution sum" and the "total sound field contribution", are introduced to analyze the interior sound field characterized with multiple field points and sound pressure peaks, and to evaluate the integrated acoustic contributions of auto body panels. In addition, a systematic methodology for automotive interior sound field refinement is also proposed on the basis of the modified PACA method. An example of a passenger car model demonstrates the application of the sound-field-refinement methodology and shows the advantage of using damping layers at optimum locations on the auto body. The example also shows that the modified PACA method has practical significance for refining the interior sound field and decreasing added mass in accord with the trend towards lightweight auto bodies.

In automotive industries, panel acoustic contribution analysis (PACA) is used to investigate the contributions of the body panels to the acoustic pressure at a certain point of interest. Currently, PACA is implemented mostly by either experiment-based methods or traditional numerical methods. However, these schemes are effort-consuming and inefficient in solving engineering problems, thereby restraining the further development of PACA in automotive acoustics. In this work, we propose a PACA scheme using discontinuous isogeometric boundary element method (IGABEM) to build an easily implementable and efficient method to identify the relative acoustic contributions of each automotive body panel. Discontinuous IGABEM is more accurate and converges faster than continuous BEM and IGABEM in the interior sound pressure evaluation of automotive compartments. In this work, a contribution ratio is defined to estimate the relative acoustic contribution of the structure panels; it can be calculated by reusing the coefficient matrix that has already been generated in the sound pressure evaluation process. The utilization of the parallel technique enables the proposed method to be more efficient than conventional methods; it is validated in two numerical examples, including a car passenger compartment subjected to realistic boundary conditions. A sound pressure response experiment based on a steel box is conducted to verify the accuracy of the interior sound pressure calculation using discontinuous IGABEM. This work is expected to promote the practical process of IGABEM for application in automotive acoustic problems.

In order to reduce noise-induced hearing loss from work-related noise exposure, mine workers, union representatives, mine managers, equipment manufacturers must work in partnership to successfully construct and implement new and better noise controls. On new machines, cabin noise levels are not normally a problem. Insulation around engines and fans greatly reduces noise and sound-proofing of the cab can keep operator exposure well below 85 dB(A). In other words, over time, exposure to noise levels at or above 85 decibels can lead to permanent hearing loss. However, the benefits of soundproofing will be lost if windows and doors are not kept closed and low noise output air-conditioning units might be needed. This article is concerned with the main sources of noise in dump trucks used for mining application and also the noise reduction methodologies.
