Vehicle-Mounted High-Power Microwave Systems and Health Risk Communication in a Deployed Environment

Abstract: Vehicle-mounted high-power microwave systems have been developed to counter the improvised explosive device threat in southwest Asia. Many service members only vaguely comprehend the nature of these devices and the nonionizing radio frequency (RF) radiation they emit. Misconceptions about the health effects of RF radiation have the potential to produce unnecessary anxiety. We report an incident in which concern for exposure to radiation from a high-power microwave device thought to be malfunctioning led to an … Show more

“…Therefore, based on the standardization of communication parameters, many studies related to crisis communication or risk communication have been promoted, and these studies involve diverse fields. For example, the application of health risk communication in vehicular high power microwave system and deployment environment [ 33 ], the application of crisis communication in spokesperson crisis [ 34 ], the role of crisis communication in enterprises [ 35 ], and the preventive role of risk communication in bioterrorism, etc. [ 36 ].…”

“…Microwaves are non-ionizing radiation electromagnetic waves and are increasingly used in domestic, industrial, medical instruments and communication applications ( 2 ). Even high-power microwave (HPM) can be used to detect potential improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in some security works ( 3 ).…”
