Vehicle Lateral Stability Regions for Control Applications

Abstract: This article presents an improved method of obtaining lateral stability regions for road vehicles, considering the influence of steering angle, center of gravity, longitudinal speed, and tire-road friction coefficient on the vehicle dynamics. Comprehensive stability regions are obtained for a wide range of such parameters. Moreover, conservative stability regions are proposed, in the case of control applications that demand robust or safety-critical control actions. Next, a steering-angle-dependent region is u… Show more

“…For instance, the safety-critical-oriented control strategies, including the stability control, tail swing drift control as well as electronic stability program, have always been the attention of automotive researchers 1 . Specifically, extreme driving including high velocity and the fierce steering angle is the main reason for the instability of the vehicle 2 . Therefore, many methods including active suspension (AS) 3 , 4 , electronic stability program (ESP) 5 , dynamic cruise control 6 , active steering control (ASC) 7 , or the use of stabilizer bars 8 have been proposed to address the above problems.…”

“…To apply the first approach, we studied lateral stability regions, with the ulterior objective of preventing the vehicle state from leaving them. We identified shortcomings in the literature, providing the contributions presented in Chapter 5 and published in (ALVES; CHINELATO; ANGELICO, 2022).…”
