Vehicle Front Structure Energy Absorbing Optimization in Frontal Impact

Abstract: Energy absorption performance is one of the most important indexes in the vehicle safety during impact. Research on the car frontal structure energy performance and structure optimization was conducted in this paper. Whole vehicle model was established by HyperMesh and simulated in LS-DYNA. Simulation results indicated that modification was needed for the original structure to meet the industry requirements. Based on simplified whole vehicle model, orthogonal design optimization was implemented, including bump… Show more

“…De acuerdo a Chen et al (2015), respecto de los tipos de materiales empleados en las carrocerías, el acero ocupa el 75 % del peso total, seguido por aluminio, plásticos entre otros. La tabla 8, indica los diferentes rangos de límite elástico para diferentes tipos de acero empleados en la fabricación de una carrocería en un vehículo.…”

“…Structural deformation from the pure torsion case occurs when couple forces of 2,000 N are applied to the left and right front wheels (Figure 5a) while the rear wheels are constrained in all translational directions (Fang and Kefei, 2019). In the case of combined torsion load representing the occasion that the left front wheel falls into a pothole, the force twice the total body weight is applied to the left front wheel, whereas the other wheels are constrained (Chen et al, 2015) (Figure 5b). The mass of the other components is also considered to analyze the safety under the combined torsion case.…”

“…Thus, the frontal structure deformation can be directly observed and facilitates the optimization of the crashworthiness of the car body. Many researchers employ this simplified approach to optimizing bus, sedan, and sport utility vehicles [29][30][31]. However, most of them suggested a simplified sled method applicable to a single vehicle, rather than a method suitable to MPV, SUV, van, and sedan.…”
