Vegetative interactions among mycelia of Laccaria bicolor in pure culture and in symbiosis with Pinus banksiana

Abstract: Mycelial interactions of Laccaria bicolor strains were studied in pure culture and after inoculation onto mycorrhizal hosts. Monokaryon–monokaryon and dikaryon–monokaryon crosses were performed on an agar medium that enhanced nuclear migration to study mating events. The first observance of clamped hyphae, their location, evidence of nuclear migration, and the occurrence of dikaryon–monokaryon matings varied among crosses. One monokaryon–monokaryon and two dikaryon–monokaryon combinations were selected for see… Show more

“…Haploid hyphae generated from meiotic spores near the parent dikaryon may even undergo dikaryon‐monokaryon mating (=di‐mon mating), which is typical for basidiomycetes, including Laccaria spp. (de La Bastide et al. 1995).…”

“…This disruption could also occur through introgression between native and non‐native fungal strains, if native and non‐native strains are vegetatively or sexually compatible with each other. For example, North American L. bicolor strains used to inoculate Douglas fir plantation trees in Europe have been shown to be genetically distinct from, but sexually compatible with, European strains at these sites (Mueller & Gardes 1991; De La Bastide et al. 1995).…”

“…North American strains are genetically divergent from European strains, yet they are sexually compatible (Mueller and Gardes 1991;De la Bastide et al 1995). Furthermore, strain S238N is sexually compatible with a strain isolated from Saint-Brisson (France) (Selosse et al 1998a).…”
