Vegetational patterns within coastal salines in southern Yemen

Abstract: For the first time, the species diversity and zonation of coastal dunes and littoral salt marshes of the extensive coastal belt of southern Arabia is analyzed by means of two transects (Aden/Madinat as‐Shab; al‐Mukalla/Feleq). The vegetation analysis results five (Aeluropus lagopoides‐, Halopeplis perfoliata‐, Halopyrum mucronatum‐, Sevada schimperi‐association, and one rest group – Aden transect) respectively seven (Anabasis ehrenbergii‐, Arthrocnemum macrostachyum‐, Cyperus conglomeratus‐, Stipagrostis parad… Show more

“…The agro-ecology of the study area (southern Yemen) has diverse terrains: a coastal strip extending 1400 km, middle altitude, high altitude, valleys (wadies) and desert (Rub al-Khali) in the north-east of the country [ 1 , 23 , 24 ]. In Yemen in general, deserts constitute more than half of the total land area (57%).…”

“…In winter, the average temperature is 23–25°C. In summer, the highest temperature reaches between 33 and 44 °C [ 23 ]. There is no significant difference between southern Yemen and neighboring countries such as Oman, Saudi Arabia and the countries of the Arabian Peninsula in terms of weather, climate and terrain.…”

“…Consistent with this is the suggestion that those species most likely to occur on islands already are widely distributed regionally (King, 1988). For example, Cyperus conglomerates, Arthrocnemum macrostachyum, Halopeplis perfoliata, Limonium axillare, Aeluropus lagopoides Zygophyllum coccineum and Zygophyllum simplex have the highest incidence on the islands and they are also the species having the highest incidence on the coast of Saudi Arabia and southern Yemen (El-Demerdash et al, 1994;Hegazy et al, 1998;Kürschner et al, 1998). This suggests that a sampling filter (sensu Cutler, 1994) also may be operating in Farasan archipelago.…”
