Vegetation Cover Change Analysis during 1989-2020 of Coastal Barguna District, Bangladesh Using Remote Sensing and GIS Technology

Abstract: This paper represents an advanced assessment of a satellite imagery-based vegetation transition detection method for Bangladesh's southern district of Barguna. Bangladesh has been identified as the most vulnerable country to the effects of climate change due to deteriorating vegetative cover and urbanization pushing forces. This paper aims to use GIS and remote sensing techniques to estimate vegetation change and determine the conversion pattern in the coastal district of Barguna, Bangladesh, from 1989 to 2020… Show more

“…The unions of Patharghata, Char Duanti, and Kalmegha are in an area of acute socioeconomic vulnerability, as shown by the Population and Structural Index (PSI), the Direct Access to Resources Index (DARI), and the Population Evacuation Need Index (PENI) (Tamima 2009 ). In terms of frequency and impact, the cyclone is the deadliest natural catastrophe in Patharghata (Islam et al 2015 ). Thus, these regions are among the worst cyclone hits (Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics 2018 ).…”

“…The study of vegetation dynamics is essential when understanding the impact of human activities on the environment since the river basin area has an essential position with the incredible natural spaces and their valuable existence from an environmental point of view. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is a valuable tool researchers use to assess changes in vegetation cover over time (Islam, Yeasmin et al, 2023). This remotesensing technique utilizes satellite images to quantify live green plant material within a specific region and can reveal patterns that indicate alterations in the ecosystem's health.…”

“…The value of NDVI ranges from -1 to 1, with -1 and 1 referring to non-existing and existing vegetation, respectively (Al Mousawi, 2022). NDVI is a standardized method to measure the vegetation cover change (Islam, Yeasmin et al, 2023). Furthermore, Kaloop, Iqbal et al (2022) mentioned a threshold value: If the NDVI value is < 0.2, then pixels are acknowledged as barren land.…”

“…This undeniable alteration can be attributed to the relentless encroachment of agricultural pursuits and the relentless march of urbanization that has persistently ravaged the pristine wilderness (Hossain et al, 2023). According to a study that employed NDVI and supervised classification approach, between 1989 and 2020, urbanization, agricultural activity, and weather condition changed about 49.25 percent of the vegetation cover in the Barguna district (Islam et al, 2023;Morshed et al, 2022). In Jhenaidah, a region in the southwestern expanse of Bangladesh, water and vegetation dynamics are of utmost importance due to its substantial expanse of Baor, an influential wetland (Kundu et al, 2018;Mredul et al, 2021).…”
