In this study, a canonical correlation analysis (CCA) was used to estimate relationships between plant characters [X set-fruit length (FL), fruit width (FW), fruit wall thickness (FWT), placenta length, stem thickness, plant height (PH), leaf length, leaf width, flowering time (50%), and time to maturity], and yield components [Y set-total fruit weight per plant (FW/P), average fruit weight and number of fruits per plant (FN/P)] of 56 red peppers [Capsicum annuum L. var. conoides (Mill.) Irish] in populations collected from the Samsun province in the Black Sea Region of Turkey. All canonical correlation coefficients (0.708, 0.635, 0.413) between the pairs of canonical variables were found to be significant (P < 0.01). The findings obtained from the CCA indicate that FN/P had the largest contribution for the explanatory capacity of canonical variables estimated from yield components of 56 red pepper populations when compared with other yield components. FL and PH had largest contribution for the explanatory capacity of canonical variables estimated from plant characters when compared with other characters. The results of this study show that PH, FWT and FW should be used with the aim of increasing yield per plant in red pepper genotypes.Additional key words: canonical correlation coefficient, canonical variable, multivariate analysis, population, variation. ResumenAnálisis de correlación canónica para relacionar caracteres de la planta con componentes del rendimiento en genotipos de pimiento rojo [Capsicum annuum L. var. conoides (Mill.) Irish] En este estudio se utilizó un análisis de correlación canónica (CCA) para estimar las relaciones existentes entre caracteres de la planta [X set -longitud del fruto (FL), anchura del fruto (FW), espesor de la pared del fruto (FWT), longitud de la placenta, espesor del tallo, altura de la planta (PH), longitud y anchura de la hoja, tiempo a 50% de floración y tiempo de madurez], y componentes del rendimiento [Y set-peso de frutos total por planta (FW/P), peso y número medio de frutos por planta (FN/P)] de 56 pimientos rojos [Capsicum annuum L. var. conoides (Mill.) Irish] en poblaciones recolectadas en la provincia Samsun de la región del Mar Negro de Turquía. Se encontró que todos los coeficientes de correlación canónica (0,708; 0,635; 0,413) entre las parejas de variables canónicas fueron significativos (P < 0,01). El CCA indicó que, entre los componentes del rendimiento, la relación FN/P fue la que más contribuyó en la capacidad explicatoria de las variables canónicas estimadas de las 56 poblaciones de pimiento. En el caso de los caracteres de la planta, FL y PH fueron los que más contribuyeron en la capacidad explicatoria de las variables canónicas estimadas. Comparison Some Fruit Characteristics of Eggplant Population with Their Selfing Lines

The aim of this research was to compare the some fruit characteristics of eggplant population with their selfing lines. The selection programme was conducted to get promising breeding lines from eggplant population of Sanliurfa. The study included 6 population (Surtepe, Altinova, Magarali, Ugurlu, Mezra and Keskince) collected from different villages of Sanliurfa where mostly growing. In the first year, 20 lines were obtained from the populations by selection program using selfing method. The scale taken from UPOV, applied in both population and selfing lines to determine the characteristics of fruit. Fruit characteristics were compared between in each population with its selfing lines, such as ratio of fruit length/diameter, fruit curvature, shape of apex, level of glossiness on fruit skin, length of fruit stalk, size of calyx, spinyness of calyx, intensity of anthocyanin below calyx, length of flower stalk, purple level of flower. All features were evaluated according to statistical values so some of the lines had significant differences from its population. Mezra 1, Mezra 4 and Mezra 5 had significant difference from its population for ratio of fruit length/diameter; Surtepe 1, Altinova 4, Mezra 1, 4, 5 and Mezra 6, lines had significant differences from the population for shape of apex. In level of glossiness on fruit skin Altinova 2, 3 and Altinova 4 lines and Mezra 4, Keskince 3 and 5 lines had significant difference from the population in statistical means. Most of the characterization of lines can be certain parameters to develop new varieties. And also Rankit-Weighted Method was applied to the lines to choose the best line or lines for some important fruit characteristics preferred by local consumer. Surtepe 1, Surtepe 2, Mezra 5 and Keskince 3 breeding lines got 750 and over score, so it will be essential to carry on the research with these lines.

Efficient Adsorption of Doxycycline Hydrochloride Using Deep Eutectic Solvent Functionalized Activated Carbon Derived from Pumpkin Seed Shell

The emerging deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are being utilized in different areas of science and engineering due to their exceptional physicochemical properties. In this study, choline chloride-based DES was prepared in conjugation with glycolic acid (GA) as a hydrogen bond donor (HBD). Activated carbon was derived from pumpkin seed shell (PSS) using microwaveassisted pyrolysis technique in an N 2 environment. The potential of synthesized DES was evaluated as a functionalization agent for PSSAC. DES functionalized PSSAC (DES-PSSAC) was characterized using FTIR, XRD, FESEM and BET surface area to confirm the functionalization and identify the physicochemical changes. This prepared DES-PSSAC was used as an adsorbent for the uptake of Doxycycline hydrochloride (DOX) from its aqueous solution. The influence of different process parameters was inspected in order to determine the optimal experimental conditions. At optimized parameters, the kinetics and thermodynamics studies were explored. Used DES was confirmed to be effectively grafted onto the PSSAC surface. The experimental data, best suited to the Pseudo second-order kinetic model, whereas adsorption isotherm data were best represented by Freundlich and R-P isotherm models. The recorded maximum adsorption capacity (q max ) was found to be 30.35 mg/g. High adsorption performance of DES-PSSAC towards DOX uptake and its reusability exhibited that this novel adsorbent can be applied to remove pharmaceutical pollutants.
