Vegetable Extracts and Nutrients Useful in the Recovery from Helicobacter pylori Infection: A Systematic Review on Clinical Trials

Abstract: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infections affect almost half of the world’s population, with gradually increasing incidence in developed countries. Eradication of H. pylori may provide significant benefits to the affected individual by healing a number of gastrointestinal and extra-digestive disorders. But due to increased microbial resistance and lack of patient adherence to the therapy, the eradication rate of H. pylori is below 80% with current pharmacological therapies. The usage of botanicals for their t… Show more

“…It has been a field of current interest that diverse traditional medicines are evaluated for application against H. pylori. Many TCMs, such as turmeric, propolis, and garlic, have been reported to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial effects against H. pylori [53][54][55][56]. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of these medicines are mainly reflected in the inhibition of proinflammatory factors and reactive oxygen species generated by the interaction of H. pylori with gastric mucosa cells [15].…”

“…Supplementation of rats with curcumin showed improvements in fecal microbes (reduced Coriobacterales and increased Lactobacillales ), resulting in the regulation of the host immune system, which in turn lowered oxidative and inflammatory stresses, and hyper-immune activation, which may lower the incidence of inflammatory gastrointestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) [ 125 ]. Literature also reported the eradication of H. pylori production with curcumin treatment and its attachment to the human gastric adenocarcinoma cell lines die to its anti-adhesion properties [ 160 , 161 , 162 ]. Treatment of animals (infected with Toxoplasma gondii ) with curcumin not only reduced the number of pro-inflammatory Enterobacteria and Enterococci , but also increased the abundance of anti-inflammatory Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria [ 126 ].…”

“… 1 H. pylori is a spiral-shaped Gram-negative, microaerophilic bacterium that colonises the gastric mucosa. 2 H. pylori is usually acquired in childhood and can last a lifetime. 3 It was first explicitly formulated in the Kyoto Global Consensus Report that H.pylori gastritis should be considered an infectious disease regardless of whether the affected individual has any symptoms, complications or subsequent illnesses.…”

“…More than half the world’s population is infected with H. pylori . 2 The prevalence of H. pylori varies significantly between regions and countries. 7 Africa has the highest prevalence (79.1%), followed by Latin America and the Caribbean (63.4%) and Asia (54.7%).…”
