Vector-scalar classification for transform image coding

Abstract: This paper introduces vector-scalar classification (VSC) for discrete cosine transform (DCT) coding of images. Two main characteristics of VSC differentiate it from previously proposed classification methods. First, pattern classification is effectively performed in the energy domain of the DCT subvectors using vector quantization.
