Vector meson production in ultra-peripheral collisions at the LHC

Abstract: By using a Regge-pole model for vector meson production (VMP), that successfully describes the HERA data, we analyse the connection of VMP cross sections in photon-induced reactions at HERA with those in ultra-peripheral collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The role of the low-energy behaviour of VMP cross sections in γ p collisions is scrutinized.

“…One of the first hypotheses is that this excess could be originated from coherent photoproduction of the meson in the peripheral region [12]. The photoproduction of heavy vector mesons has already been well explored in ultraperipheral collisions [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] and can act as a complement to allow us to obtain information about the gluon distribution in the nuclear medium. However, there are few works in the peripheral collisions regime (in particular, b ≃ 2R A ), where the exclusive photoproduction mechanism may still be relevant for the heavy vector mesons production.…”

“…The consistency of the model can be attested by Figure 1 where the cross section for J/ψ photoproduction off the proton is compared with measurements of the ALICE collaboration for pPb ultraperipheral collisions at √ s N N = 5.02 TeV [31]. The connection between vector meson photoproduction off protons and UPC was described in a recent work [32] where also several theoretical models were compared in the study of pp ultraperipheral collisions at 7 TeV.…”

“…[32] however shows that models based on nucleonic degrees of freedom do describe rather well the cross section and rapidity distribution of J/ψ production in UPC even at very high energies and rapidity range between 2 and 4. It is worth to notice that in the above mentioned work the authors used a correction coeficient in the J/ψ photoproduction which was not used here.…”
