Vector control and foliar nutrition to maintain economic sustainability of bearing citrus in Florida groves affected by huanglongbing

Abstract: This experiment demonstrated that vector control, especially when combined with enhanced foliar nutrition, could significantly increase yields in a citrus orchard with high incidence of HLB. Economic thresholds for both insecticide and nutrient applications are needed under different market and environmental conditions.

“…For each of the treatments, the Ct values of Las varied over time but generally decreased from November 2008 to October 2011 ( Fig. 3; Stansly et al 2013). The Ct values of Las decreased in trees receiving nutrients compared to trees not receiving nutrients in the first 2 years.…”

“…These results suggest that insecticide and nutrient applications could not slow the spread of HLB once the trees were infected by Las (Chiyaka et al 2012). The Ct values of Las were significantly increased by insecticides in January 2010 but not significantly thereafter (Stansly et al 2013), suggesting that the effects of insecticides on Las titres were significant only in the initial phase of epidemic development. Overall, the insecticide treatments did not reduce HLB spread compared to the untreated controls.…”
