Vector and tensor analysing powers in deuteron–proton breakup reactions at intermediate energies

Abstract: Vector and tensor analysing powers of the dp → (pp)n (charge-exchange) and dp → (pn)p (non-charge-exchange) breakup reactions have been measured with the ANKE spectrometer at the COSY ring at a deuteron beam energy of 1170 MeV for small momentum transfers to the low excitation energy (pp) or (pn) systems. A quantitative understanding of the values of A xx and A yy for the charge-exchange reaction is provided by impulse approximation calculations. The data suggest that spin-flip isospin-flip transitions, which … Show more

“…The equipment used was described in our earlier publications [10,14,15]. However, for the study of the spincorrelation parameters in 2009 [20], a newly developed polarised internal target [12,13] was installed at ANKE and this was employed in experiments at 1.2 and 2.27 GeV.…”

“…(5.1), the theoretical predictions for A xx and A yy being taken at mean values of q in each bin. The validity of this approach was checked at T d = 1.17 GeV in the earlier experimental studies at ANKE [14]. The beam polarisation in each state was taken as the weighted average over the different values of the momentum transfer.…”

“…The diproton programme at ANKE involves several experiments: study of mesonless deuteron break-up pd → {pp} s n [2][3][4][5], study of one and two pion production in pN collisions [6,7], and of inverse diproton photodisintegration pp → {pp} s γ [8]. Investigation of single pion production and the charge-exchange reaction are the key double polarization experiments in the future physics programme at ANKE.…”

“…This has already been proved [2] at ANKE. During the first phase of the np programme at ANKE [3], polarized deuteron beams incident on hydrogen targets were used, yielding important results [4,5]. However, at COSY the maximum momentum of the beam is 3.7 GeV/c, thus the maximum energy per nucleon in the case of deuteron beam is 1.15 GeV.…”
