Vasovagal Reaction and Ischemic Colitis Following Blood Donation

Abstract: Vasovagal reactions are the most common type of adverse reaction after blood donation; however, there are no reports of ischemic colitis as an adverse reaction after blood donation.A previously healthy 55-year-old woman suffered loss of consciousness at the end of her first plasma donation. She was diagnosed with a vasovagal reaction and received hydration. However, she developed persistent left flank pain and watery diarrhea, followed by bloody diarrhea. Abdominal computed tomography confirmed ischemic coliti… Show more

“…VVRS is not uncommon during cardiac interventional procedures, but this does not mean that it should be neglected. VVRS has also been reported after venipuncture or even vaccination ( 13 , 14 ). This indicates that VVRS is not confined to the heart but is present throughout the circulation system.…”

“…The Authors Reply We would like to thank Dr. Izumida and Dr. Imamura for their interest in our paper (1) and for taking the time to express their concerns. Their concerns were "whether such a transient (only 10 seconds) colonic hypo-perfusion would cause ischemic colitis" and whether "thrombophilia (i.e., a deficiency of protein C, protein S, and anti-thrombin III) might be associated with ischemic colitis"…”

“…To the Editor We have read with great interest a case report written by Mizumura et al (1), showing that the lack of a transient colonic blood supply might be a key factor in the onset of ischemic colitis. Two concerns should improve the quality of their report.…”
