Objectives The use of hormone therapy (HT) for hot flushes has changed dramatically over the past five decades.In this cross-sectional questionnaire study, the aim was to describe the use of HT and alternative treatments and to study the frequency of hot flushes. A further aim was to compare data from the present questionnaire with data from previous studies made in the same geographic area.Method A questionnaire was sent to a random sample of 2,000 women aged 47-56 years living in Östergötland County, Sweden. The results were compared with findings from previous studies regarding use of HT, alternative treatment and hot flushes, and the number of HT prescriptions dispensed during the corresponding time using data derived from the Swedish Prescribed Drug Registry. ResultsThe response rate was 66%. Six percent used HT, in line with prevalence data from the Swedish Prescribed Drug Registry. Alternative treatments were used by 10%. About 70% of postmenopausal women reported flushes and almost one third of those with flushes stated that they would be positive to HT if therapy could be shown to be harmless, a view more often stated by women with severe complaints of hot flushes (67%). ConclusionThe use of HT and alternative treatments is low and many women suffer from flushes that could be treated. Women considered their knowledge of the climacteric period and treatment options as insufficient. Individualized information should be given and women with significant climacteric complaints, without contraindications, should be given the opportunity to try HT.3

RESUMOObjetivo: Descrever as técnicas de acupuntura aplicadas para alívio de ondas de calor decorrentes do período do climatério. Método: Revisão sistemática na base de dados Medline, pelo método P.I.C.O, onde P=Postmenopausal, I=Acupuncture e O= Hot Flashes. Foram selecionados artigos científicos controlados e randomizados sobre o tema em questão. Um total de 12 artigos preencheu os critérios de inclusão; mulheres saudáveis na fase pré e pós-menopausa e mulheres com risco para utilização de terapia hormonal, relatando ondas de calor, submetidas às técnicas de acupuntura sistêmica e eletroacupuntura. Resultados: Estudos analisados indicam alívio dos sintomas para ondas de calor nas variantes severidade (média 50%) e frequência (média 45%), porém a eletroacupuntura, quando observada em longo prazo, apresenta melhor resultado em relação à acupuntura sistêmica. Conclusões: Estudos sugerem que a prática da acupuntura é segura e eficaz para amenizar ondas de calor, tanto em mulheres saudáveis como em mulheres com contra indicação para a reposição hormonal.

StreszczenieMenopauza jest kolejnym etapem życia kobiety, w którym bardzo często dochodzi do obniżenia jakości życia ze względu na występowanie wielu schorzeń i objawów, m.in. objawów wypadowych typu uderzenia gorąca. Uderzenia gorąca i nadmierne pocenie się, będące ich nocnym odpowiednikiem, występują w okresie okołome-nopauzalnym u większości kobiet. Jednocześnie są najczęstszym powodem zgłaszania się pacjentek w okresie okołomenopauzalnym do ginekologa. Podstawowym sposobem terapii tych zaburzeń jest stosowanie menopauzalnej terapii hormonalnej (menopausal hormone therapy -MHT).Jednak nie wszystkie kobiety mogą stosować MHT, a część z nich dodatkowo obawia się terapii hormonalnej. Ta grupa pacjentek szuka alternatywnego sposobu złagodzenia objawów klimakterycznych. Jedną z tych metod jest akupunktura, która w ostatnim dziesięcioleciu znalazła uznanie jako metoda bezpieczna i skuteczna. Autorzy przeprowadzili retrospektywne badanie grupy 86 pacjentek w okresie okołomenopauzalnym, niestosujących MHT, z nasilonymi objawami naczynioruchowymi, które poddały się w latach 2010-2011 zabiegom akupunktury. Badanie to miało odpowiedzieć na pytanie o skuteczność akupunktury w leczeniu uderzeń gorąca.Słowa kluczowe: akupunktura, menopauza, uderzenia gorąca. SummaryThe menopause is a successive stage of the woman's life, during which the quality of her life decreases very frequently due to the occurrence of many diseases and symptoms, among others, the perimenopausal symptoms such as hot flashes. Hot flashes and hidrosis as their night equivalent, appear during the perimenopausal period in the majority of women. At the same time, they are the most frequent reason of women patients in the perimenopausal period, for seeing the gynaecologist. The basic therapeutic method used in treatment of the above mentioned disorders is the menopausal hormone therapy (MHT).Nevertheless, not every woman can apply the MHT, and some women are also afraid of using any hormone therapy. Namely, this group of women is looking for an alternative way to relieve symptoms of the climacteric. One of these methods is acupuncture, which gained a recognition within the last decade as a safe and effective method. The authors conducted a retrospective study with a group of 86 women patients in the perimenopausal period with the exacerbated vasomotor symptoms, who were not applying any MHT, but who underwent acupuncture treatment in 2010-2011. The study was to answer a question about effectiveness of acupuncture in treatment of hot flashes.
