Vasogenic Cerebral Edema following CT Myelogram with Nonionic Omnipaque 300

Abstract: Computed Tomography (CT) with myelogram is a relatively safe procedure. It requires the use of nonionic contrast agents which, unlike ionic contrast agents, have been associated with low complication rates. We report a case of a 69-year-old female who developed diffuse bilateral cerebral edema following a lumber myelogram with the use of intrathecal nonionic contrast agent Omnipaque (Iohexol) 300. We were able to find one other reported case of cerebral edema following the use of intrathecal nonionic contrast … Show more

“…Although CT myelography is an invasive procedure and infrequently used because of potential complications such as spinal headache, radiculopathy, cerebral edema, or spinal subarachnoid hematoma, 26 , 27 , 28 it may be regarded as a suitable alternative to MRI in selected cases. The administered contrast fills the CSF space around the spinal cord, resulting in good contrast between the spinal cord and CSF so that the spinal cord contours can be delineated.…”

“…[3][4][5] Cerebral oedema is also a rare complication of intrathecal contrast injection with few case reports being described in the literature. 2 We are reporting this case so that clinicians are familiar with this uncommon complication of CT myelogram to start early management for better patient outcome.…”
