Vascularization of Conjunctival Autografts in Pterygium Surgery: Comparison of Fibrin Glue with Sutures

Abstract: Fibrin glue fixation of conjunctival autografts led to more vascularization in the early postoperative period than suture fixated grafts, which in turn may have significance in terms of graft health and pterygium recurrence.

“…In this study, we evaluated the influence of pterygium removal accompanied by autologous conjunctival autografts and the use of human fibrin tissue glue on changes in corneal parameters, as measured by 3-D swept-source AS-OCT imaging. The superiority of the sutureless method in terms of shorter surgery duration and improvement of patient's comfort in postoperative period without negative impact on complications rate has been well documented [9][10][11][12][13][14]. The location of the pterygium as a superficial corneal lesion determines its alterations of corneal topography.…”

“…In our meta-analysis, 23 trials reported the recurrence rate. Of these studies, five [13, 28, 31, 39, 40] reported no recurrence in both groups, which may be related to the short follow-up time. Ratnalingam et al [29] found no significant difference between suture and FG groups at 1 month and 6 months postoperatively.…”

“…11 The use of fibrin glue, instead of suture, significantly reduces the surgery time and increases the patient's comfort postoperatively and prevents suture-related complications. [12][13][14][15][16][17][18] Both these two techniques also reduce recurrence rate, but it is controversial that fibrin glue usage technique decreases the recurrence rate more than the suturing technique. Some authors report that it is more effective in decreasing the recurrence rate.…”
