Vascularisation of ocular coralline hydroxyapatite implants

Abstract: Abstract. Vascularisation of coralline hydroxyapatite used to replace the enucleated bulb is of critical importance for the uncomplicated implantation of a motility peg connecting the implant with the cosmetic prosthesis. Technetium-99m diphosphopropanedicarboxylic acid (DPD) single-photon emission tomography (SPET) was used to evaluate the rate of vascularisation as well as the time required for completion of vascularisation. Twenty-four patients were enrolled in the study, which was designed to evaluate vasc… Show more

“…Thereafter, scintigraphic imaging of ocular hydroxyapatite implants was used by Perri [16] and Dutton [17]. Menzel et al evaluated the rate of vascularisation of ocular hydroxyapatite implant by scintigraphy [19]. They concluded that vascularisation occurred early and it was completed by 4 months after implantation but they could not demonstrate this histologically.…”

“…[ 15]. Die spongiöse Struktur mit zahlreichen miteinander verbundenen Kanälchen ermöglicht das Einwachsen von fibrovaskulärem Gewebe, das sich mit unterschiedlichen Methoden radiologisch nachweisen läßt [2,9,25]. Sowohl bei synthetischem als auch bei korallinem Hydroxylapatit wird das Einsprossen von Bindegewebe begleitet von einer milden Fremdkörperriesenzellenreaktion im und an der Oberfläche des Implantates [17,18,231.…”

“…Indeed, several studies showed that complete vascularization, studied with Tc-99m biphosphonates, appears between 1 and 6 months after surgery. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] However, a local malignant lesion or an orbital infection (taking into account a yellow-green discharge from the left eye) could not be definitely ruled out in this patient. For differentiation between normal and abnormal uptake, SPECT-CT (Symbia T2; Siemens) was performed.…”
